Welcome To Black Dog Design, Inc.

Our business is the manufacture and installation of custom fabric coverings for both marine and home projects.  Whether you are looking for boat or boat trailer covers to protect your investment from the elements, bimini tops for boats or awnings for your home to block the sun or rain, or special coverings for windows or decks, we are here to help.  We can also update the upholstery in your boat, and we are now replacing snap-in carpet in boats as well. As a custom shop, we generally need access to your boat, trailer, or home from which to work.

In addition to custom fabric work, our expanded store includes the Big Green Egg cooker along with “Eggcessories” to go with it, and we are carrying art work and decorative items, many from local artists.  Come to the Store from time to time to see what’s changed!

Hand-Woven Textiles by Barbara Page

Here is a sampling of beautiful textiles created by Mount Ida weaver and veterinarian Barbara Page. She weaves scarves, placemats, tea towels, baby blankets, etc. Barbara works with cotton, bamboo, and tensile. The best thing about Barbara’s textiles is, aside from her donating her talents and office time to the Warm Hearts Humane Society of Montgomery County, she gives all proceeds from her sales to Warm Heart!

Evergreen Acres Mini Farm is a local business run by owners Tommy and Penny Walden. The couple farm organically, keep bees, and produce products from honey and wax. A Classic 1957 Chris Craft Reupholstery

In 2012, the Black Dog Design Team was asked to restore the upholstery of a beautiful 1957 Chris Craft runabout that had belonged to their customer’s father.  Here is the original article describing that restoration.

Most unfortunately, the boat was recently sunk, apparently due to problems in its hull’s restoration, so after the boat was cleaned, the damaged hull repaired, the engine de-watered, etc., she was returned to Black Dog Design for another reupholstery and re-carpeting job.

Looking like it just rolled off the showroom floor following beautiful reupholstery work by Black Dog Design!

As you can see, she turned out just as beautiful as before, ready to provide her family with many more years of wonderful memories.

Drop Skirts Extend Protection From The Sun

This customer’s boat was really getting beat up by the sun on its port side.  Adding a custom drop skirt to the existing cover can help prevent fading and damage.

This custom drop skirt blends with the manufacturers covers and protects the sides of the boat from its nose all around, including the swim platform.

Ski Boat Re-Carpeting

If you have a ski boat or cruiser that has either no carpet or carpet that has seen a better day and needs replacing, Black Dog Design, Inc., can help with that.

We work directly with the carpeting mill and can make new patterns of the areas in question for a perfect fit.

We use only the best quality carpet that comes in many colors and designs. The AquaLoc back can actually be used without snaps in protected areas.

Sailboat Covers Galore!

There was an article in a local magazine recently that featured a photograph of a sailboat dock at Mountain Harbor Resort.  We were pretty excited about the photograph, since we recognized that a number of the boats shown featured canvas work that was fabricated by the Black Dog Design Team.  So, not having received permission to use the magazine’s photo, we decided to grab a camera and take our own!

Much of Black Dog Design's work can be seen in this photograph of sailboats at Mountain Harbor.

The photograph above shows boat covers, bimini tops and frames, mainsail covers, line bags, helm covers, and even a cover to protect the boat name on the stern from the elements.

The custom covers on this Hunter sailboat not only protect the cockpit and bimini, but there is also a cover to protect the boat's artwork on its stern!

All projects are custom and require careful measurement and the making of patterns prior to cutting and sewing the fabrics. Bimini frames can be fabricated according to customers’ wishes and the space available on the boat. Black Dog Design can also create covers for windows and the cockpit areas as desired.

A Special Barge Set Up For Winter Fun

This was a special order barge from Veranda Boat Company whose customer wanted to be able to use the boat in all seasons.  Veranda came to Black Dog Design to provide this special enclosure.

The clear enclosure with replaceable screen panels allow the owners of this party barge to enjoy it all year!

The clear panels zip onto the bimini top and zip to each other.

We also ended up making screen panels that could be changed out with the clear. These were ordered after the boat was shipped to Louisiana. The customer shipped the clear panels back to Black Dog Design, and they were used for a pattern to make the screen enclosure panels.

Screened panels can replace the clear windows in the enclosure for bug-free breezes in the summertime.

The wonderful thing about clear enclosures is how easily they heat up with very little sun in cold weather. The great thing about screen or scrim panels is that there is airflow through the boat, but bugs cannot get in. The scrim also has a sun protection factor and is a good choice for people who have sun issues yet still need to be out on the water with nature.

A Look At New Items In Our Store – January 2015

In addition to our “day jobs” creating top-quality canvas and fabric items for your home, boat, camper, furniture, and so forth, we continue to enjoy bringing to you a variety of art and practical items in our Joplin Store.

Here’s an update on some of the new things you can find in our store. Click on an image for a larger view.

Ceramic Wall Hangings

In this new selection of wall hangings, I am working with a new selection of colors, and I am using driftwood, crystals, linen threads, and silver wire, and I am bringing other aspects of our beautiful surroundings into my work. These pieces may be used in or outside.

The “Natural State”

I started making various sizes of our wonderful state for special orders. In each of those items, I have highlighted various resorts, Lake Ouachita, farming areas, and home towns. Now I am getting requests for other states from customers. Funny how some things get started.

Tables by David Kimball

These incredible tables are created by David and Charlee Kimball. The tables are created from from wood David cuts and drys in his own kiln. The couple meticulously creates these stunning pieces of art. From lettering, staining, and construction, they are really something.

Oil Paintings by Gigi Buhrow

Some oil paintings from Gigi Buhrow. Gigi lives in Hot Springs but spends many hours on Lake Ouachita, enjoying sun rises and sunsets. She has a great love of painting goats. They really speak to her with their sweet quirky faces.

Odds and Ends

We also offer some decorative items in our store that are not locally made. This assortment is always changing so stop by from time to time to see what wonderful new items we have.

Jan’s Ceramics

A selection of my decorative and functional ceramics is always on hand and is always changing. All of these pieces are high fired and can be used as serving pieces, vases, platters, etc., or just for décor. I hand form the pieces in a free form way, and they usually take their own shape. I find this is a very relaxing and enjoyable way to work, compared with my day job of following patterns and being precise about every project.

Knives from Mike’s Collection

We have an ever-changing selection of custom made, new, and vintage knives. The prices are all over, so there is something for everyone.
